Six Signs a Garage Door Cable Has Gone

Cables are the quiet half of the counterbalance system, and they fail in a small number of very recognisable ways.

One bottom corner is sitting lower than the other

The clearest sign there is. With one cable no longer pulling, that side of the door drops and the whole thing hangs at an angle in the track. It usually looks worse than it is — provided nobody has kept running the opener.

There is slack cable on the floor or wrapped round the shaft

Look at the shaft above the opening. A cable that has jumped its drum ends up looped on the concrete or wound into a bird's nest around the shaft, and it will not go back on by hand while the springs are still wound.

You can see broken strands or rust at the bottom

Cables fray from the outside in. Run your eye — not your hand — up the last couple of feet above the bottom bracket, the part nearest the damp slab. Broken wires standing proud of the lay of the cable mean it is on borrowed time even if it has not parted yet.

The door jammed at an angle and stopped

One side kept climbing while the other did not, and the door has wedged itself in the tracks. Forcing it, in either direction, is what turns this into a bent-track and creased-section job.

You heard a twang and one side dropped

A cable under load lets go with a sharp metallic snap rather than the gunshot bang of a torsion spring, and the corner it was carrying falls immediately. If that happened while somebody was standing in the doorway, that is exactly why we say do not stand under it.

The spring broke and now the cables look wrong too

When a spring lets go, the full weight of the door lands on cables that were never sized to hold it alone. It is very common for one to jump its drum in the same second. Assume both jobs, and mention the spring when you call so the right parts are on the truck.

Before You Touch Anything

A Slack Cable Is a Reason to Stop, Not to Try Again

Don't run the opener, and don't touch the bottom bracket. With one cable gone the whole load goes through the other side, which twists the door in its tracks and turns a cable job into a cable, roller, track and section job. The bottom bracket at each corner is under full cable tension even with the door closed — unbolting it is one of the most reliable ways to get badly hurt in a garage. Your springs carry the weight of the door. The cables are what connect that stored tension to the door itself — steel rope running from a bracket at each bottom corner, up the side of the opening, and onto a grooved drum at each end of the torsion shaft. As the springs unwind, the drums turn and wind the cables in, and the door comes up. As it closes, they pay back out under control.

The important consequence is that the cables are the only thing making the two sides of the door move together. Lose one and the door does not simply get heavier; it gets lopsided, and a lopsided sectional door in a steel track is what ends up off the track altogether. That is why the advice here is so blunt about not pressing the button again to see what happens.

Torsion cables and extension cables are not the same job

Which system you have decides the parts, the labour and the safety procedure. You can tell them apart from the driveway in about five seconds:

If your extension springs have no containment cable threaded through the middle, say so when you call. Fitting them is a small job we would much rather do on the same visit than come back for, and it is the difference between a spring that fails and a spring that flies across the garage.

Why cables go in pairs

Both cables have been on the door since the same day, have flexed over their drums exactly the same number of times, and have sat in the same humid Georgia garage. When one lets go, the other is not "the good one" — it is the same age, with the same corrosion, that happened not to fail first. The cable itself is a small part of the cost of the job next to getting a technician to the house, so fitting one and leaving its twin is a false economy that tends to book its own follow-up call within the year.

What a Proper Cable Repair Includes

Threading a new cable on is about ten minutes of a job that should take rather longer. Here is what a technician actually does, and why the checks either side of the cable itself are the part that stops you calling again.

  • Secure the door and control the spring tension before anything is unbolted. Clamps on the track, and winding bars on the shaft where the springs need to come off tension.
  • Replace both cables in the correct length and gauge for the door's height and weight.
  • Re-seat them on the drums and set the drums even, so both sides lift together. This is the step that decides whether the door hangs straight afterwards.
  • Inspect the bottom brackets, the drums and the shaft bearings. A cable that unspooled has usually been sawing at something on its way round.
  • Check the springs. A snapped cable and a tired spring turn up together often enough that it is worth ruling out while the door is open.
  • Re-balance the door by hand. Off the opener, a correctly balanced door holds its position anywhere in its travel and moves with one hand.
  • Reset the opener's travel and force settings, which were very likely turned up while the door was fighting a bad cable.
  • Test the safety reversal and the photo eyes before the door is handed back.

How do I know if a garage door cable has broken?+
The giveaway is that the door hangs crooked: one bottom corner sits lower than the other, or the door has jammed at an angle partway through its travel. Look at the two cables running from the bottom brackets up to the drums at either end of the shaft. A failed cable is either slack and looped on the floor, wound in a bird's nest around the shaft, or visibly frayed with broken strands sticking out. If one side looks tight and the other looks loose, that is your answer.
Can I still use the garage door with a broken cable?+
No, and this is the one place we would ask you to take the warning seriously. Running the opener on a door with a failed cable pulls the whole load through one side, which twists the door in the tracks, can drag it off them entirely, and frequently turns a cable job into a cable, roller and section job. If the door is down, leave it down and call us. If it is up, do not stand under it and do not pull the release cord, because the cable is part of what is holding it there.
Why did my garage door cable snap?+
Four causes cover almost all of them. Rust, because the bottom few inches of cable sit closest to a wet slab and that is where the strands go first. A broken spring, which dumps the full weight of the door onto cables that were never sized to carry it alone. The cable jumping its drum after the door came down on something and went slack. And plain wear, since a cable flexes over the drum on every single cycle for as long as the door has been on the house.
Do both cables get replaced or just the broken one?+
Both. They are the same age, they have been through exactly the same number of cycles, and they have sat in the same damp garage, so the surviving one is not in better condition in any meaningful sense. Cables are also the cheap part of the job compared with the visit, so replacing one and leaving its twin is a false economy that usually books a second call-out within the year.
How long does garage door cable repair take?+
Usually under an hour on site for a straightforward pair, once the door has been secured and the spring tension is under control. That covers fitting new cables, re-seating them on the drums, setting the drums so both sides are even, checking the bottom brackets and the shaft bearings, re-balancing the door by hand and re-testing the opener's travel and safety reversal. If the cable took a roller or the track with it on the way out, add some time for that.
Why can't I just re-wind the cable back onto the drum myself?+
Because the drums are locked to a shaft that is under the full tension of the torsion springs, and getting a cable back on means loosening set screws that are holding all of it. Video tutorials skip past that part. Winding bars, a controlled release and a door that is properly supported are what make it a routine job rather than a hospital visit. The bottom bracket is the other one to leave alone: it is under full cable tension even when the door is closed.
Is there a charge for coming out to look at it?+
