Lift cables corrode where they sit in the drum, out of sight. On doors this age a frayed cable is one of the more common things we find, and it is the failure that most often drags a door off its tracks.
Three decades of Georgia summers work on the wooden jamb the track is bolted to. When the jamb moves, the track alignment goes with it, and the door starts binding at the same point every time. Realigning the track without checking the jamb is a fix that does not hold.
