Read the noise
Stand inside the garage, run the door through a full cycle, and listen for where in the travel the noise happens and what kind of noise it is. That is most of the diagnosis.

| Grinding from the opener head | A worn drive gear inside the opener — classic on older chain-drive units. The motor runs, the door barely moves. |
| Rattling or vibrating | Loose hinge, track and bracket bolts. A door flexes thousands of times and works its own fasteners loose. |
| Banging or booming | Panels flexing under load, or a door that has gone out of balance and is being dragged rather than lifted. |
| Popping at one point in travel | A roller binding, a bent hinge, or a section catching where the track curves. |
| Scraping, metal on metal | A bent track, or a roller that has come out of its track. Stop using the door. |
| One loud bang, then nothing | A torsion spring has snapped. Do not run the opener again. |
Lubrication: the part most people get backwards
Half the noisy doors we are called to would be quiet with ten minutes and the right can. The other half were made worse by the wrong one.
Do not use WD-40 as the lubricant
The original WD-40 is a solvent and water displacer. Sprayed into a roller bearing it strips out the grease that was already there and leaves nothing behind, so the door goes quiet for a week and then comes back louder than it started. It is a fine thing for freeing a rusted bolt. It is the wrong product for the moving parts of a door.
Use a white lithium grease or a spray sold specifically for garage doors.
Where it goes
- Roller bearings — the stem where the wheel meets the shaft, not the wheel face.
- Hinges — the pivot points between sections.
- Springs — a light coat along the coils of a torsion spring reduces the ringing and slows corrosion.
- Bearing plates and the end bearings either side of the torsion shaft.
- The lock bar and any rail the trolley rides in.
Where it absolutely does not go
The tracks. The track is a guide for the rollers, not a bearing surface. Grease on it collects the pollen and fine red grit that gets into every garage in this part of Georgia and turns into a grinding paste that chews rollers faster than running them dry would. Wipe the tracks out with a dry cloth instead.
Tighten what has worked loose
With the door closed, go along the hinges and the track brackets with a socket and snug up anything loose. Two cautions: snug, not gorilla-tight — over-torquing strips the sheet metal and makes the problem permanent. And leave the brackets at the bottom of the door alone. Those are under cable tension and are not a homeowner job.
The single biggest change you can make
Nylon rollers. Most builder-grade doors leave the factory with steel rollers running on unsealed bearings, and once those wear, the door sounds like a freight train through the ceiling of whatever room is above the garage. A set of nylon rollers with sealed bearings is a routine job, costs far less than an opener, and is usually the single biggest reduction in noise available on an existing door — particularly worth it in the newer Paulding and Cobb County subdivisions where a bedroom sits directly over the garage.
When noise means the door is out of balance
Banging and straining, rather than squealing, often means the springs are no longer carrying the door's weight and the opener is doing work it was never designed to do. Test it: with the door closed, pull the red release cord, lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go. A balanced door stays roughly where you put it. If it drops or climbs on its own, the spring tension is wrong.
When the noise is the opener, not the door
A grinding or whirring from the head while the door crawls or sits still usually means a worn drive gear — a known wear item on older chain-drive openers, and a repair rather than a replacement in most cases. A rattling chain that slaps the rail needs tensioning. A belt-drive opener that has started to whine is usually the motor bearing.
