Why Garage Doors Fail in the Georgia Climate
A garage door is the heaviest moving thing in most homes — a double door with its hardware runs well over 300 pounds — and it cycles several times a day without anyone thinking about it. In north Georgia it does that through long humid summers, pollen season, and the occasional hard January cold snap. That swing is what wears torsion springs, stiffens rollers, rusts cable ends and drifts the safety sensors out of alignment.
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. A standard 10,000-cycle spring on a door that opens four times a day is living on borrowed time after about seven years, which is why a door that behaved perfectly for a decade can fail on an ordinary Tuesday morning with a car shut inside. When it goes, the bang is loud enough that most people think someone hit the house.
