First: does the wall button work?
This one test splits the fault in half and takes five seconds.
- Wall button works, remote doesn't — the opener and the door are fine. You are looking at the remote, the receiver, or the wall console's lock setting.
- Nothing works — it is not a remote problem. Check the power, the breaker, and whether the opener is plugged in. Then look at the door itself.
1. The lock button on the wall console
Start here, because it costs nothing and it is the answer more often than anyone expects. Most wall consoles have a lock or vacation button. Pressed — usually by a coat sleeve or a child — it disables every remote and keypad while leaving the wall button working perfectly. That is precisely the symptom people ring us about. Press and hold it to release, and look for the small indicator light going out.
2. The battery
Obvious, and still worth doing properly. Two notes: a brand-new remote can arrive with a battery that has been sitting on a shelf for two years, and a cold snap will finish off a marginal cell overnight — which is why remotes so often “die” on the first genuinely cold morning of the year. Check the contacts for corrosion while the case is open.
3. The light bulb problem
If the remote works from three feet away but not from the driveway, and nothing else about the setup changed, think about the last bulb you fitted in the opener.
Inexpensive LED and CFL bulbs emit radio noise across the same band garage door remotes transmit on. The interference does not stop the remote working — it just drowns it out beyond a few feet, so range collapses without anything appearing broken. It is one of the most common faults in the trade and one of the least known outside it.
The test: unscrew the bulb in the opener head, then try the remote from the driveway. If the range comes back, that was it. Fit an LED rated for garage door openers — they are made specifically to avoid this — or go back to an incandescent rough-service bulb.
4. The antenna
A short wire hangs down from the opener head. That is the antenna, and it needs to hang straight down and free. Coiled up, taped to the housing, or tucked over the rail during a tidy-up, it loses most of its range. Straighten it out and try again before assuming anything is broken.
5. Reprogram the remote
Openers occasionally lose a stored remote, particularly after a power event. There is a Learn button on the back or side of the opener head, usually under the light lens and usually coloured. The sequence is the same across most brands: press Learn once, then press the button on the remote within about thirty seconds and wait for the opener's light to flash or click.
Two things worth knowing. Holding Learn down for several seconds does the opposite — it wipes every remote the opener knows, which is a useful thing to do deliberately when you move house and a frustrating thing to do by accident. And the colour of that button identifies which rolling-code generation your opener belongs to, which is what determines whether a given replacement remote will work at all.
6. Keypads specifically
- Keypads have their own battery, usually a 9V, and they live outside in Georgia humidity. They fail sooner than remotes.
- Reprogramming a keypad follows the same Learn-button sequence.
- If four of the buttons are visibly worn shiny and the rest are not, your PIN is effectively written on the pad. Change it — it takes a minute — and change it again after any contractor or house-sitter has used it.
When it is the receiver, not the remote
If two different remotes both stop working at once, and the bulb and the lock button are ruled out, the common factor is the opener's receiver rather than the remotes. Same conclusion if a freshly programmed remote will not learn at all, or if the range is poor from every direction with the antenna hanging correctly.
